Environmental Awareness & Care

Under the direction of the Green Schools Committee, our pupils have secured the Green Flag, for their efforts in protecting our environment, for the last 10 years. The school is awarded a new green flag every two years. This year the school achieved its fifth International Green Schools Flag on the theme of Biodiversity.

Green-Schools, known internationally as Eco-Schools, is an international environmental education programme, environmental management system and award scheme that promotes and acknowledges long-term, whole school action for the environment. Unlike a once-off project, it is a long-term programme that introduces participants (students, teachers, parents and the wider community) to the concept of an environmental management system.

The Green-Schools programme is a themed programme with each theme taking a minimum of two years to complete. We have completed the following themes at Annagh N.S. – Litter and Waste, Energy, Water and Travel and now Biodiversity.   The Biodiversity Flag acknowledges the vital role by the school in promoting and preserving Biodiversity and culminated in the development of a creative, reflective outdoor classroom space, which we called our Wayfarer’s Garden.

Regularly our school takes part in a WOW Day (Walk on Wednesday) where we walk together, pupils, parents and staff to school. This is a great occasion for the school community and is enjoyed by all.
